to start my travel tales I’m experimenting with the free mms deal optus have going which means i can send the photos taken on my phone to a website. my lil motorola is pretty dodgy in quality, but it works for happy snaps like this one, of Franklin Square in downtown Hobart. i visited ‘tassie’ the weekend of june 18-20 so i could go to my dear bro’s engagement party. before the big night i took a little walk round the old haunts– back in the day cool kids would hang out in franklin after skool, smoke illicitly and watch the sk8rs tricks. it’s a place with another resonance for the geek in me: it was the subject of the first ever cultural studies assignment i got an HD for.

you can’t tell from this photo, but underfoot the ground was so cold and soggy it had turned to mush. how quickly i’d forgotten about the long sludgy winters, spoilt by brisbane’s sunshine. still, after visiting chicago the next week, i now realise the feebleness of complaints about hobart’s chilly climes. one building described to us on our boat tour of lake michigan had to be completely rebuilt – at more than the cost of the entire skyscaper – because the winters had turned the structure brittle.
