US of A

I haven’t written much about the US yet, i’m still recovering… all the maps of chicago i had were WRONG, i swear it wasn’t my disorientation or fear of the hordes of people or lack of sleep that made me get lost a lot or try to find museums that weren’t even built yet. but having bought a suit–momentarily caught in the capitalist ecstasies of the mag mile, or perhaps overcome by the number of starbucks i had seen in the radius of said mile–i know things were amiss.
i cannot believe the hotel i stayed at in urbana. it was awesome. full of armour suits and plush velvet curtains and huge fireplaces and camp paintings. the wallpaper… the four poster beds… the lack of iron or hairdryer… not a business lady’s first choice, but what an experience. made all the greater by the knowledge, gleaned late on the second night on one of many generous and overloaded rides home, that meaghan morris and larry grossberg were being put up in the very same place. hehe. and the guy on the desk at 2.30am on the last night checking me out and listening to aphex twin. a blissful jarring of worlds. we bonded when i told him i was australian as ‘digeridoo’ was playing.
