back again in sydders, and all seems right with the world. tara picks me up for free by parking in the departures dropoff zone (local nous). we take the redfern/erskineville route back to brown st. we have some baileys and talk about the election and our jobs. i run the paper argument by her and it makes some sense. the trains rock me to sleep. i wake up to campos coffee, miranda devine and the flightpath. the inner west–what’s not to love?
last night i had a moment of revelation: i may in fact be the person in the “new media” ads i will soon be dissecting. at BNE airport i order a cascade premium, which the bar attendant hears as ‘VB’. i pay the extra $1.35 to change it, lamely claiming that i hadn’t left the house that day so didn’t have the requisite practice in speaking loudly enough. then, finding the least noisy corner of the cafe (under the i don’t think i’m kidding 2m wide tv screen blaring the simpsons) i open my ibook and work on my conference paper. question: would this same series of events feel different in the qantas club?

too true! i guess what i like *so* much is knowing how unwelcome she is in the few parts of sydney i go to… but maybe what i’m really getting at is that in brisbane i miss sydney’s newspaper ethic. people read the paper here. despite the actual content, at least the herald offers some distinction from vegas’ australian-courier mail nexus.
maybe?

Hey, I came up with a pun related to your conference last week. Maybe you could set that as an essay question:
“If you have a heart, then Agamben’s a part of you. Discuss.”

I spent years reading the herald instead (far superior cryptic crossword) but it’s hard to make the argument to the newsie in each new suburb that they need to get it in for me.

wow jean, i think we were just reading each other’s blog at exactly the same time. yes this is something i would like further discussion about – what does it *mean* when one’s newspaper buying is seriously most to do with the standard of crossword? a hot topic of debate in my house at the moment (hence confirming my crown of geekdom for the week)

wow, I think we were too. kewl.
Beyond the geek factor, there is probably something of a cultural cringe factor in purchasing the smh/age instead of the cm, i.e. a lame desire to inhabit a “real” city. the courier-mail of course does not help this with it’s incredible lameness and depression-inducing broncos celebrations, it’s bashing lefties with a soggy dishrag and its gardening tips

Geek yourself
Ha! I knew it… You are 16% geek OK, so maybe you ain’t a geek. You do, at least, show a bit of interest in the world around you. Either that, or you have enough of a sense of humor to pick some of the sillier answers on the test. Regardless, you’re p…
