join the club

“I will need your support, and I will work to earn it. I will do all I can to deserve your trust.” George W. Bush claims victory.

Once Ohio looked shaky, Graham, Josh and I headed to the staff club to drown our sorrows. Woke this morning to hear an interesting discussion between Christopher Hitchens and Neil Newhouse (an electoral analyst in the US) in which Hitchens lambasted the ineptitude and corruption of the opinion poll industry - comments just as relevant to the farcical predictions here in Australia as in the US. Newhouse’s response: ‘If you’re a Democrat today I’d suggest keeping away from sharp objects’.

Here we’ve had an extra month to get used to the uneasy and unfamiliar feelings that my American mates must be going through today. To them I want to say, this will only make our friendship stronger. x x

So, what advice do you have with your month’s acclimitisation (acculturation?)? I’m not getting along so well. Paeans about this making “us” stronger are sounding a little weak to my ears.
