Disappointment

I can’t believe it, another idyllic image comes crashing down! Robert Doisneau’s famous ‘Kiss At City Hall’ was staged. And the couple only lasted a couple of months. Sigh.
Apparently this is old news. The photographer cleared the record in 1992 with these interesting words: “I would have never dared to photograph people like that. Lovers kissing in the street, those couples are rarely legitimate.”

Oh, noooooo! Another youthful illusion forever ground into the dust - I had a big poster of that photo on my room in college

I do love that comment about passion on the streets being paradoxically a sign of illegitimacy - so much for ‘public’ and ‘private’, right? Which reminds me of when there used to be a campus culture at UQ; one of the dubious side-effects was en masse public snogging anywhere the young lovers could find a patch of grass - no wonder the Great Court was always so green. They were rolling around at uni cos they lived at home with their parents, I guess. Anyway, you see less of it these days, with all the young gentry-in-waiting racing across the Great Court instead of lolling about in it - off to their 20-hour-a-week jobs or to get their hair done or go boutique shopping
