Tariq Ali kissed me! It was my birthday on Sunday and he was speaking at the Writers Festival where I was hawking books for Gleebooks. My boss whispered in his ear that I was a massive fan. The great man walked over, wrapped me in a big bear hug and planted a kiss on each cheek, wishing me a happy birthday. I’m ashamed to say I metamorphosed into the archetypal gushing fan!
Nice to see you in Syd. And thank you for your thoughtful paper.
A bientot.

Tariq was fabulous, as he always is. I went with my friends P & E and had a thoroughly enjoyable and politically stimulating evening after the obligatory Schonnell pizza and proletarian-priced bottle of Semillon! Some thoughts on his talk here, with more to come.
