Bright Young Philosophy Things
After morning tea I headed to the panel on affect, where the now Dr Anna Hickey-Moody gave a great paper, ‘Folding Flesh into Thought: Vitalism & reading theory through movement’. It was based on her work on intellectual disability which I’d heard a bit of before but still learned plenty. Then Felicity Coleman hadn’t been able to make it so I headed in to the session featuring my ol’ Gender Studies buddies. I caught the last half of Julie Mackenzie’s paper on universalism and Martha Nussbaum. I like Julie’s take on the humanism problem: she says that while Nussbaum calls for a politics of human capacity, in different contexts humanism may not always be the most pressing identity or solidarity people share. Christina Colegate then gave an interesting paper on the influence of Claude Lefort’s work on Laclau and Mouffe’s Hegemony and Socialist Strategy.
