Help for a small town girl
Posted on | July 12, 2005 |
I’m about to book my trip to the US in September and I’m wondering if anyone could give me some tips about where to stay in NYC. I’m on a tightish budget but I’m not quite at backpacker level - plus I’ll be staying for a fortnight writing the book so it will have to be a room of my own with a desk. So, fellow bohos, if I’m spending my time visiting CUNY and NYU, where should I stay?

I can give you just one tip, Mel - the Excelsior hotel on the Upper West Side (81st I think) is where I stayed for three weeks about a year ago, and I thought it was absolutely terrific. Clean, quiet, comfortable, brilliant location. The subway is on the corner and so is Central Park. Generally with NYC if you book accommodation far enough in advance, like straight away, and do it online, you can get a pretty good deal for a long stay.
There was nothing I’d call a desk in the room, but instead there was a long wide bedside table sort of thing that you could pull up a chair to. The lower end rooms are really short on space, especially in the newer hotels. Some of the pretty boutique places in soho & nolita have nothing but a bed and a shelf above it. Not recommended.
Drop me an email if I can be of any more help, though really finding stuff out when you get there is half the fun of trips like this. *jealous*

Thanks so much! Unfortunately when work is paying for accommodation it means I have to book everything through them, and plan all details to the nearest millisecond. It makes things quite bureaucratic, drawn out and joyless. If I can get a bunch of suggestions together for them to act on it helps a lot. This is great!
