Priorities

Today I intended to go to the library but got sidetracked on the way buying t-shirts that I swear I need. I made it there eventually and took a tour, because if I’ve learnt anything in the last few days it’s to follow as much advice as you can get and acquaint yourself with your surroundings before attempting any meaningful activities within them. It’s an amazing building. Tho I’m not sure, despite Michele’s assurances, that I will be able to work in there. The main reading room is quite exposed. I really miss having a room of my own, and fear that I will spend the next 8 days feeling very frustrated unless I can sort out an option for work. (It’s no fun in a big city by yourself! I think I’ve exhausted all my independent lady energy moving state twice. I’m tired of ‘facing’ the world. Oh dear, sounds like a lame excuse even as I write it. Actually maybe it’s another case of getting to know what I’m interested in. And it sure isn’t endless shopping and crowds.)
Apparently they used to dress the grand marble lions out front of the library according to major events in NYC’s social calendar until someone decided that couldn’t happen anymore, for posterity’s sake - the marble would be damaged, etc. I feel mad about these kind of hyper-conservationist tendencies that infect public culture these days. I truly think the Western world has all its protectionist priorities wrong at the moment. Chopping down centuries old trees? Packaging everything in three layers of unrecyclable plastic? Mining impoverished nations for minerals? Sure. But Lions with Yankees caps for a week? No way.
Maybe I’m crazed by this because I’d just love to go and put a Sydney Swans scarf on one of the lions this week. I’m so homesick: what am I going to do with my team in the Grand Final this Saturday, and me in NYC where it will be 4am?
