The Power of the Image: Affect, Audience & Disturbing Imagery

The School of Communication Arts is seeking a doctoral candidate to undertake a research project funded by the Australian Research Council. The successful candidate will develop a project that involves research across the fields of media studies, affect theory and visual culture and will be supervised by Associate Professors Virginia Nightingale and Anna Gibbs.

The research will form part of a larger project that examines the way affects and emotions are encoded in media images and that explores teenagers accounts of what makes certain images hard to forget. This project aims to identify the links young people make between affective and emotional reactions to media imagery, their own values and attitudes about the violence in every day life (eg sexual harassment, bullying, fights at school), and their assessment of their own power and agency.

Criteria:
* Bachelor Honours or Research Masters degree in Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Art Theory (or equivalent qualifications)
* Demonstrated interpersonal skills: ability to engage effectively with teenagers from diverse cultural backgrounds and to encourage participation of groups and individuals in research development
* Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills, including experience in writing research reports
* Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Prior relevant professional experience or research assistance experience is desirable

Scholarship:
* Tax-free index-linked stipend of $25,118pa for 3 years
* Funded Research Training Scheme place
