Out and about

Neighbour-y homes

Last weekend I learned that at 27 I am too old to see live music without being in some kind of physical pain (or Sigur Ros is a sit-down show the second time around). In January I had to leave the Mars Volta before 10.30pm because I seriously thought I was going to pass out from heat exhaustion. I couldn’t see, I couldn’t stop streaming sweat, and I couldn’t get over it. I am worried about my rock credentials. I am worried about the fire exit strategies of The Arena and The Tivoli.

This weekend I learned that a ‘Monstera deliciosa’ is scary looking but yummy. It’s kind of a wild banana that tastes like pineapple too. I also learned that riding a BMX with flat tires is really hard and admitted that I like reading The Financial Review a lot more than any other newspaper.

I can just hear my former self.

as an undergrad and servo CSO (where i got to read most of the dailies for free) the Fin was definitely my choice of newspaper. Just as insane as the others but with less bullshit.

If there’s one thing that makes you feel even older than standing amongst a crowd where the next oldest person looks about 13, which makes my 40 year old grey hair and fat gut look about 60, it’s the feeling that you just want to sit down in comfy chair to watch the show cos your back is about to give out from standing up for so long.

I think the idea to cope with the heat is to get so shit-faced drunk you don’t notice (and get doubly dehydrated). I didn’t drink when I was in my 20s so I never discovered this until it was too late.

I have often wondered about The Arena being a firetrap, as far back as when it was called The Roxy. I remember a Hoodoo Gurus show there where it was so overcrowded they closed the doors for 10 minutes so the bouncers had time to get at the back of the crowd and sqaush them all forward to the front. They then opened the doors again to fit more people in. I saw them do this at least three times - it was so hot the walls were sweating.

The fact that the place is just around the corner from where the Whiskey Au Go Go fire happened which killed a bunch of people probably adds a bit to the unease. I think the shit-faced drunk thing is again meant to be the mechanism for ceasing to worry about this.

The shit-faced drunk thing may also assist with being able to cope with reading certain other newspapers too, although I can’t vouch for this.

It’s so true, about being drunk enough not to notice. It’s why I never noticed until quite recently. I am verrry scared to hear this local history Andrew! And now that I read the Fin Review, I’m also plagued by weird sentiments like: when you pay over $70 for a ticket, you wanna be treated nice.

    And see.

Hey, I was standing on the footpath for that Hoodoo Gurus gig, and never did get in.

    Maybe just as well really…
