Hi Craig, the book details are here, but it's pricey as, so maybe best to head to a library to find it. I think the Andrew Ross chapter would be the most interesting to you given what I know of your own research and politics.

Pen: let us know what you think!

I'll write a bit more about the content of the conference when I get a minute, but I agree with a lot of Glen's analysis.

Hey Mel, it was great to meet you at the conference. Not sure if the Melbourne photos will be uploaded, they should be distributed, maybe discretely!

And Jean, John Frow said mentioned something about publishing this paper next year in order to reach an even greater audience outside of cultural studies specifically. So it should be coming out in some form...

how dare you all have such a fun conference without me! I think I'm most jealous of the cultstuds karaoke action. Would like to hear more about the Frow keynote too. What did he have to say?

Aw, now I wish I'd gone to the cultural studies conference. I have a copy of your book, and Kate's, on my desk. Would have been fun to meet you both. :)

[...] I had fun. Lots and lots. The Sydney postgrad cohort wasn’t as represented as the Melbourne massive. Not too many postgrads from the UWS CCR were there and only a few from USyd Gender Studies. Not sure why this was so. Maybe the conference theme? Numbers on the conference will be interesting. There seemed to be many more people in Sydney last year. It was cool to hang out with some of the cultstuds crew such as Wil, Mel C, Mel G, and Xian, who I all know reasonably well. This is why I go to these conferences. Sure, also to show off some bullshit I have thought up or researched over the last year, but also just to hang out with people I don’t see very often. It was also great to meet the peeps from Melbourne, in particular Michael Dieter who has commented on here. We had some productive chats. Shout outs to Bjorn, Graham, Gemma, Tammy, Nicole, Ben, James and the wonderful gypsy who tired to hex me with a fired rice prawn epitaph. [...]

Ace pic, Glen. That moment of listening is difficult even when the words are lovely. Particularly so.

A good friend admitted that he got teary when Catharine Lumby was talking about the process of how our respective books came into the world. I think that's because a friend knows the back stories and personal costs of writing a book and completing a project that spans several years. It's the weight of the process that's overwhelming. Or maybe that's just the effects of champagne at lunch. Whichever.

p.s Speaking of Flickr, I'm glad to see a certain Marx Brothers trio shot at Parliament House has remained (relatively) anon...

glad you liked the snaps. i've got one from the public lecture that also is more about capturing the affects of the relation of public-to-lecture then capturing the frontal gleam of what is 'meant' to be felt in the circulation of knowledge of a 'public lecture' (perhaps exemplified better in the final keynote where it was also obviously an event in a particular canberra social milieu and well dressed punters performed 'audience' in a certain way).

re photo of will and i. the particular arrangement of my arms makes me look like a thug about to monster something on approach to parliament house. brilliant. all my machismo fantasies are satisified.
