$55 000 to study social networking online

I’ve been keeping a big secret and now I’m finally able to spread the news. Last night my online intimacy project was given a UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award! You can read all about the study here, but if you are a regular reader you’ll already know that this is the spin-off project from my ARC postdoc, and that it’s headed towards a co-authored book with Catherine Driscoll of the University of Sydney.

The extra money means I’ll actually have enough funds to do what I proposed to do in the APD application - that is, hire someone to help me with the interview side of things, and get the interviews transcribed professionally while I get on with other writing and reading. This is going to make a big difference to my current workload, so I’m very happy. Yay!

Below is a pic of me trying to kiss my award, sports lady style, but it was a bit dangerous to get too close:

The catch for getting the award and lots of champagne and turkey sandwiches last night is that tomorrow night I have to give an after dinner talk to the university’s industry “friends”. If only the trophy came with a wardrobe budget…

  1. Let me be the first to say YOU ROCK MEL!

  2. Nifty! :) Congratualtions!

  3. Yay!

  4. Hmmm… surely there is something ironic or just plain silly to say about a grant for social networking and a photo of the recipient of said-grant in front of a door marked ‘private entrance’ … but I will leave that to Glen to figure out … Lovely for you Mel, very happy news!

  5. Congrats! Now I get why you were saying on Facebook that you were excellent. And you totally are. I love that photo btw.

  6. PS Is that your lounge suit?

  7. Yes Jean! And I need another one for tonight, eeeek

  8. Extravagantly she cries, ‘Braavvo, ma belle!’

Yet further well-deserved recognition of the prescience of your inquiries and your general fabulousness.

    Mwah mwah mwah!

    (How’s that for online intimacy?)

  9. Great photo. And congratulations.
