We are sad to announce that Pownce is shutting down on December 15, 2008. As of today, Pownce will no longer be accepting new users or new pro accounts.
To help with your transition, we have built an export tool so you can save your content. You can find the export tool at Settings > Export.
Please export your content by December 15, 2008, as the site will not be accessible after this date.

I was never clear on the difference between Pownce and Twitter anyway. Looks like the littler one got squeezed out.

I never bought the “Twitter-killer” line. For me, Pownce was a completely different thing: it took a bit of fiddling (developing unofficial guidelines and group behaviours), but eventually we managed to turn it into a tightly focussed social network that was ideal for multi-threaded discussions with a variety of access-limits.
It was canned shortly after we found it to be indispensible. Still looking for a replacement…

if the internet has taught us anything, nothing is indispensable. there will always be some sort of replacement. or something that makes us forget about looking for the replacement.
