RIP

After the Magic Dirt show at the Doghouse in Hobart some time in ‘95 or ‘96 my friends and I stole tour posters from the power poles all the way home. Dean played Fairy Park and I asked Miles to teach me bass guitar. Puppyfat must have covered every track of Life Was Better that year, with Jenna stepping in to sing on He-Man and Ice. Magic Dirt made sense when a lot of things didn’t. RIP Dean. Thanks for showing that real men can stand alongside ladies in rock.

Dean produced Ben’s last record for Bit By Bats – he leaves 2 very young kids and a wife behind. [And as I reminded Ben way too often, no 17% super for being a rockstar.] Talk about a tough gig. We will go to see the dirt at Annandale this Friday if the gig is still on.

my partner, Anna, pointed me to your post. Dean produced two recordings for bit by bats, we recorded in ‘05 and ‘07. He mentored us and numerous other australian bands, while balancing magic dirt, but his focus was family, he doted on his (then) very young daughter and his newborn.Dean was as kind and genuine and reliable as all the tributes to his life have suggested, he touched many, and will leave a lasting legacy upon the australian music scene, and upon all those who met him
During recording one time, i couldn’t get a good take down for a really simplistic beat. it got the better of me, i threw the sticks at the kit, swore at it and left the building. i returned, dean looked at me and said ‘was wondering how long it was going to take for you to do that. but now you’ll be able to play.’
he was a humorous, calm and knowing person. and very talented.

Great story, Ben. Thanks for sharing it. I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of teachers the past few days. Sounds like he gave a lot. And now I am going to check out your band! I had already heard of them!! Must be the Melbourne connections. We have lots of notes to compare next time we meet.
