They are pretty heavy

Some readers might find this funny; I obviously did!

Priorities

Today I intended to go to the library but got sidetracked on the way buying t-shirts that I swear I need. I made it there eventually and took a tour, because if I’ve learnt anything in the last few days it’s to follow as much advice as you can get and acquaint yourself with your [...]

Literature

Yesterday I had lunch with Catherine Driscoll who was here in New York for a conference. She’s a visiting fellow at Duke and Princeton this semester, and we were chatting a bit about the differences in disciplinarity, Theory and I guess grad student attitood in the various locations we’re familiar with. (Disclosure: I’m part way [...]

Things I wasn’t expecting in NYC

1. So many dogs
2. So many children, and in prams (I think I actually believed there were no children in Manhattan)
3. So many happy people
4. So many languages, so often, all the time
5. People wearing Che Guevara t-shirts and reading Che Guevara books
6. An office guy getting on the subway in Mid-town at peak hour [...]

Out and about

My favourite building
Guess where I went today? I’ve finally loaded some photos on flickr from the past week. There are some non-building ones which you might find amusing, too.

South

Today I ate Catfish, Black Eyed Peas and Ocra.
Yesterday I ate Pub Chips: ‘Just like potato chips only better.’
Wednesday I ate Hushpuppies, Crabcakes & Fried Green Tomatoes.
Tuesday I ate two breakfasts because Cathay Pacific decided it was cheaper to serve meals fitting the destination time zone.

UNC

Sitting in Larry Grossberg’s office at UNC where tomorrow I am supposed to give the talk I was supposed to write on my 15 1/2 hour flight from Hong Kong. I just went to buy a phone card to call Optus because my mobile phone isn’t working despite my Global Roaming being switched on (doesn’t [...]

Splendour Weekender

I’m off to Splendour in the Grass in Byron Bay. Seems they’re even blogging it this year. I’ll say hi to Josh Homme for ya.

Help for a small town girl

I’m about to book my trip to the US in September and I’m wondering if anyone could give me some tips about where to stay in NYC. I’m on a tightish budget but I’m not quite at backpacker level - plus I’ll be staying for a fortnight writing the book so it will have to [...]

Different views

Sanctuary and Lagoon
This is my Dad’s place on Bruny Island where I’ve been catching up with family and taking a big break from the world. Now I’m in Snug, just south of Hobart, staying with my brother. I think today we’re going to do the famous tree walk - just in case we needed [...]
